Daniel Day-Lewis, the legendary actor, has spoken out against the misconceptions and criticism surrounding Method acting. In a captivating conversation at the BFI London Film Festival, Day-Lewis addressed the controversies and shed light on his unique approach to acting.
The three-time Oscar winner for Best Actor, known for his immersive and dedicated performances, explained that the criticism often stems from a lack of understanding. He emphasized that Method acting is not a cult or a mysterious science but a powerful tool for actors to connect with their characters and unleash their creativity.
"It's about freeing yourself," Day-Lewis said. "When you're in front of the camera with your colleagues, you want to be open to any spontaneous moment that arises. Method acting allows you to respond authentically and naturally."
Day-Lewis clarified that being "in character" doesn't mean isolating yourself from real life. Instead, it's about creating a self-contained experience, a unique world where the actor can fully embody their role. He added, "If you've done your preparation, you should be open to whatever emotions or thoughts come your way."
After an eight-year hiatus, Day-Lewis made his return to acting with "Anemone," a psychological drama directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. This role marked a significant comeback for the actor, who had previously announced his retirement after his Oscar-nominated performance in "Phantom Thread."
Reflecting on his iconic role in "My Left Foot," Day-Lewis acknowledged that the film's portrayal of disability might not be accepted in today's world. He credited this film with shaping his acting style, as the extensive preparation and immersion in his character's world became a defining aspect of his craft.
"I had the luxury of time and an incredible support system," Day-Lewis explained. "I lived in Dublin, immersed in the character's world, using a wheelchair, and learning to write and paint with my foot. It was an intense experience, but it taught me the value of deep research and commitment."
Day-Lewis's dedication to his craft has often been a subject of debate. Some question the necessity of such extreme preparation, but Day-Lewis sees it as a logical approach. "It might seem extreme, but it's about understanding the human experience as deeply as possible. As an actor, you have a responsibility to embody the character's journey."
